Q:Do you like J.crew?

Anonymous

Nope. J Crew has such a wide variety of products that it’s hard to generalize the quality of the merchandise as a whole, but everything in that store is too big on me. Their suits, their shirts, pants, everything is just way too loose, even in their smallest “slim-fit” sizes. As someone who’s 5’10 and 130lbs, the mall-tier stores I usually shop at are American Apparel (hooray unisex sizing!) and Uniqlo (I go to New York and Korea pretty often, but you can place a phone/e-mail order if you don’t have one near you).

If you are of size though, here’s what I think of J Crew in terms of design (yes, I know I just said I can’t generalize because they have such a wide selection): J. Crew offers affordable clothing to people who want a trad/prep look, but don’t really care about fashion. The cuts (even their “slim-fit”) are very traditional and the quality is fairly average. Depending on where you are, their in-store selection pretty poor and their designs as a whole are boring and recycled. From what I remember about the last time I visited J. Crew, I thought their socks, ties, and pocket squares were pretty nice, but overpriced. If you spend a little more time looking, you can easily pick up more quality pieces or cheaper pieces. (or both)

TL;DR I think for some of their more basic stuff, Uniqlo is just better all around and if you have the money to spend on some of their more high-end stuff, I suggest you shop elsewhere, as there are many other labels who do trad and minimalism in a more modern and interesting manner.

Here’s a nice, if boring, pocket square. One of the better products offered at J. Crew.
